The past and the future

The future spellbinds those who believe in the effective

ness of will, whereas the past fascinates those who are

aware of the ineffectualness of human determinations.

What man sets out to do is always boring, but what he

achieves sometimes amazes us.

obtiene

nos asombra a veces.

I wonder if the different size fonts make this saying about not being so obsessed with the future seem more dissident, more contrary.  That’s why I like the Sec Pistols and Catholicism.

  • Each of life's insults of a beloved countenance nourishes true love.

Nothing saves the mediocre from their mediocrity

Don’t I know it!

—Neither imitation of the past, nor of the present, is an infallible remedy.

Nothing saves the mediocre from their mediocrity.

Evil does not see itself

—El mal, como los ojos, no se ve a sí mismo. Que tiemble el que se vea inocente.

—Evil, like the eyes, does not see itself. May he tremble who sees himself as innocent.

Virtue that does not doubt itself.

—Virtue that does not doubt itself culminates in attacks against the world.

I have observed a lot of this so-called virtue in the world these days.  These aphorism is a plead for moderation and humility.

Layers of Imbecility

—Layers of imbecility deposit themselves in the soul like sediment over the years.

Man lives himself

Do animals experience anguish?

—Man lives himself as anguish or as a creature.

From a thing into a person

—Love is the act which transforms its object from a

thing into a person.

The most common prejudice

—The prejudice of not having prejudices is the most common one of all.
